By overstepping her prerogatives, in the midst of the war in Ukraine, the President of the Brussels Commission is taking herself for what she is not.

Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the President of the Brussels Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, does not know where to give her voice, as if she had proclaimed herself queen of the European Union. Each time, she takes care to formulate her remarks in English, to remind us that the official language in force among the 27 is that of the Anglo-Saxons, notwithstanding the Brexit and the departure of the British.

One day, she announces that Kiev is destined to become a member of the EU, as if she could modify at will a long and complex process, the terms of which are provided for by treaties on which she sits without batting an eyelid. Another, it confirms the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, thus putting the finger in a gear that can lead far, especially when one of the belligerents - the aggressor, in this case - has the atomic weapon. The prospect of total war on the old continent does not seem to move her too much.

She plays with freedom of expression

On a third day, she decided to ban the Russian media RT and Sputnik from the EU, calling them "Russian war propaganda". Shortly before, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube (aka Google) had already blocked their accounts. These media outlets are automatically equated with a nest of spies in the pay of Moscow, which will go straight to the heart of the 100 journalists employed by RT France, for example, without anyone having been able to find anything wrong with their work. It is true that RT and Sputnik are financed by the Russian state, but just as France 24 and RFI are financed by the French state. Before claiming that they are waging Putin's media war, it would be necessary to prove it, without violating the freedom of expression usually defended in the name of democracy.

Ursula von der Leyen doesn't care, since she rules over her territory like a lord over his fiefdom. Not long ago, she had already made a name for herself in a video in which she awarded good points to the students in her class, the best of whom were entitled to the European recovery plan. She congratulated France for its "reforms", including the unemployment insurance reform, which hits the unemployed in the wallet. In passing, she hailed "the beginning of a French success story supported by Europe". Good, Madame. Thank you, Madame.

The supreme technostructure of the EU

But who does Ursula von der Leyen, known for her business connections, think she is? Until further notice, she was not elected by anyone. It is not because she presides over the Brussels Commission that she is invested with a mission to evangelize the people. It is not because she heads the supreme technostructure of the EU that she can legitimately call governments to account, fine them, let alone decide for them by enforcing orthodox order with a shiv.

The Eurobéats like to repeat that Europe only applies what the countries that make it up decide. They claim loudly and clearly that the Brussels Commission, like the other European institutions, only respects the directives given by the heads of state. Of course, the latter are indeed the decision-makers. But through the various treaties, the European Commission has been given the right to legislate in the slightest detail, to monitor the strict application of the precepts laid down, with the onus on the countries to comply with them to the last comma or face immediate sanctions.

And this is how Ursula von der Leyen takes herself for what she is not, confirming in passing that it is not enough to feminize the European institutions to give them a democratic veneer that they are furiously lacking.
