Olympics is a huge milestone in the figure skating community, and in the sport as a whole. Being able to be in complete control of your routine, style, and artistic choices and still being able to win in such a naturally conservative and harsh sport is a huugeee deal.

But nobody is talking about how her recent wins signify a complete shift in the intense physical standard for figure skaters as a whole. No one is pointing out how moving it is that she- a woman who is in complete control of herself and her bodily autonomy was able to win in a sport that seemingly has never allowed that. They're talking about... how she's "gooner bait"?

I, just like plenty of other people, could never quite understand the obsession that seemingly conservative men had with women who were so outright alternative. Alysa Liu is the same woman that called Trump's immigration regime "ridiculous". She is the same woman who attends ANTI-ICE protests, is a feminist, and goes against the beauty standards that judges and conservative men have forced women to conform to. Her win in the recent Winter Olympics should have been a punch in the face to them, and their "traditional" fuckass standards towards women. But instead, they sexualize her, pulling her so far away from her win that you get more information on her appearance than her routines on the ice.

This isn't the first example of conservative men becoming oddly parasocial and obsessive over such alternative women. There are countless amounts of influencers who adhere to standards that should be driving these men away, but instead pulls them in.

It's not about the looks, nor desire, and definitely not about the clothing. It's about control.

Liu is a woman who is in complete control of herself. Her story drove people in specifically because they know how figure skating is. The strenuous training, the expensive costumes, and the strict judging. It's harmed people in the past, and driven other skaters off the edge. Alysa herself had the privilege of retiring at 16 and coming back when she turned 18. She came back happier, healthier, and in complete control.

And that's not something conservative men are comfortable with women having.

Conservative men fantasize about domesticating women like Alysa Liu. They see how she is, how she looks, and how she acts, and know that it's way out of their far-right standards. They imagine a life where they can pull her back into it, and if not, degrade her enough by tearing her down for her appearance, or pulling the attention off her success. She is not the only victim of this. Influencers, other celebrities, and regular women experience this on a daily basis. And it's a fact a lot of people, especially men, don't want to face.
